Shifting Sands
This artwork is inspired by the expanses of sandhills found throughout Australia. They striate across the land and their perpetual movement and varied colours have always fascinated our people. I recall my father telling me how the patterns formed by the wind are repeated throughout nature. I especially reflect on this when flying over the desert and then over the waves of the ocean. Lands reflects early memories of driving to Adelaide, watching the country shift with each passing kilometre. Soft pinks give way to rich reds, purples, and dusty golds. Marked by movement and memory, the painting maps not just place, but feeling, the awe of watching Country unfold. Eucalyptus Bark
In the Northern Territory, where the earth bleeds into distant horizons, eucalyptus trees stand as silent witnesses to the passing of seasons. Our people have used these trees for as long as our stories remember. The bark gives us material for our baskets & shelters. The leaves, when & boiled, make medicine for coughs and fevers. This artwork was painted originally by our father William King. I have recreated it in digital art. I remember him being mesmerised by the repeating patterns in nature. Travelling reflects the many routes taken across Country as people journey from place to place, connecting, trading, sharing knowledge, and exploring the land. Fire
The heat of fire can be felt in these artworks and it is this feeling of warmth that our father said would be the same sensation our ancestors had experienced thousands of years ago. I learnt this style directly from our father. The thousands of red and yellow dots on each canvas create a nurturing glow that flicker around the canvas, producing an inviting optical effect, that captures the colour of fire. I capture the movement and shimmer of the water as seen from above through my varied tonal use of blues and whites. I paint aquatic peaks and troughs employing a condensation of dots to create the sparseness of dots to reveal the black background below and represent the deep black waters and the shadows lurking underneath. The Flowing of rhythm & colour, this print seeks to captures the spirit of desert waters hidden beneath the earth. The dots move like ripples in the heat - red for the earth, purple for ancestral memory & magenta for the tracks of water. Each mark tells of Country breathing, shifting, and remembering. Bushlands captures the quiet transition of the Northern Territory’s landscape as it shifts from the lushness of the wet to the stillness of the dry. Greens linger in the undergrowth, while rich pinks bloom briefly, vibrant, defiant signs of life before the dry.
